June 19, 1865 is the date in history that the Emancipation Proclamation was read from the Governor’s balcony in Galveston, Texas, proclaiming all enslaved people free; now known as a day of reflection, respect and community celebration. Juneteenth is a historical celebration honoring the end of slavery in the United States. Texas was the first state to make it a holiday in 1980.
Bluffton MLK Observance Committee has hosted Juneteenth in the town since 2014 and has given the community an opportunity to learn and unite together condemning the vile practice of slavery and honoring the lives of all who fought for its abolition. It's also an opportunity to see and recognize the many contributions brought to this country by Africans who were enslaved. The festival patronizes local Black businesses, includes live performances and entertainment and has become an official in the Town of Bluffton since 2020.
