JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION & FESTIVAL (2019)

BLUFFTON JUNETEENTH FESTIVAL
June 8, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm
A Bluffton Community Celebration of Emancipation and Freedom with special guests and viral sensation The Geechee Experience of Charleston, SC, live entertainment, performing artists, drum circle, food vendors and much more. June 7-8, 2019 at the Heyward House & Oyster Factory Park. Presented by the Bluffton Martin Luther King Observance Committee with support from the The Heyward House.
We are excited to announce that special guests Akua Page and Chris Cato who have taken the Lowcountry by storm with their creation, The Geechee Experience will headline the Bluffton Juneteenth Celebration. A cultural movement that fuses education with entertainment, The Geechee Experience “is a cultural platform that was created by Geechee millennials on a mission to preserve their culture and language,” the group maintains. The Geechee Experience works to dispel longstanding notions that Geechee is not a language or is a “broken” language. Those misinformed opinions have led to Geechee’s endangered importance in Black culture and an outright pursuit of erasure by the descendants of the same colonizing European Americans that enslaved Africans for centuries and now consist of the majority of the U.S. population.
The Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 8th, at the Bluffton Oyster Factory Park, will feature a day of live performances, organized activities, food vendors, and arts and craft vendors. Juneteenth is the recognized date of Emancipation, corresponding to the June 19, 1865 date the Emancipation Proclamation was read from the Governor’s veranda in Galveston, Texas. Make plans now to join us for this community celebration!
